Introduction

Up until last summer I had used only digital cameras. It seemed easy, practical and convenient. But last summer I became interested in film photography. My grandfather gave me his old film camera which was made in USSR. I was very excited and immediately bought a film. Despite the fact that my grandfather had explained everything to me about how to use the film camera I couldn’t manage with this complex mechanism. It didn’t look like modern cameras, so I didn’t know what kind of pictures I should expect from it. When I finally got the photo pictures, I was pleasantly surprised. Although many of them were out of focus and poor in composition, they were all quite nice. Afterwards I accidentally found one video on YouTube about a special concept of photography. It was called Lomography. I got interested in this type of photography, so the topic for my project was born.

After some time of studying all the information about Lomography I started to understand the difference between photography and Lomography. I know that it’s quite difficult to understand the difference between the two, that’s why I want to explain and demonstrate it in my project. Nowadays Lomography is a rather popular and essential type of photography. People from all over the world know about Lomography and use various Lomo-cameras. So, I think it’s necessary for people to understand and know this difference and start using it in a broader way.

In my presentation, I want to show many advantages of Lomography and the reasons why people should at least try using it. May be some of them will discover new and exciting ways to express their emotions as well as their view of the world around them. Lomography can be used as an effective tool to impress people.

The main part

1. The history of lomography

1.1. What is lomography?

Lomography is a pretty recent type of manual photography which aims to capture photos with human life for what it is. It was invented by the Lomographic Society, founded in the early nineties in Austria and uses special cameras known as the LOMO cameras. LOMO stands for Leningrad Optical Mechanical Merger. The name comes from the name of the lens factory in St. Petersburg, Russia.

People who enjoy Lomography and loves taking photographs using LOMO cameras are referred to as “lomographers.” There are also 10 golden rules that define ‘lomography’ which I will tell you later.

Lomography is a globally-active organization dedicated to experimental and creative photography. With millions of followers and friends across the world, the concept of lomography encompasses an interactive, vivid and sometimes even blurred and crazy way of life. Lomography is also considered an art movement; as there are now several stores, galleries, groups, competitions and embassies around the world aiming to spread and support the art. The Lomographic Society International headquarters is in Vienna, Austria, but it maintains a website where lomographers can purchase their cameras, interact with fellow photographers, share their photos and techniques, etc.

1.2 The story of the birth of lomography

This story has begun in 1983 when Michael Panfilovich Panfilov examined a camera he received. Michael was the Director of the powerful LOMO Russian Arms and Optical factory in St. Petersburg, Russia. This factory manufactured weapons and optical instruments in the Soviet Union. The camera that caught his attention and interest was acquired from General Igor Petrovich Kornitzky, the confidant of Secretary of Defense and Industry of the Soviet Union. This camera was the Cosina CX-1, a little Japanese compact camera. Panfilov gave order to the LOMO PLC factory to create an improved version of the Cosina CX-1. So, the first working sample of the LOMO Compact Automat (LOMO LC-A) was born.

In 1984, the LOMO LC-A began mass-production. Starting at 1100 units per month for the Russian market, the camera’s popularity soon spread to then Communist countries such as Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Cuba.

However, the production of these cameras gradually weakened until two students from Vienna, Austria later rediscovered it in 1991. These two students, Matthias Fiegl and Wolfgang Stranzinger, stumbled upon the LOMO LC-A in a quirky, old-school camera shop, and started shooting from the hip. They also reproduced similar types of cameras and sold them at a cheaper price. Lomography then began to rapidly grow in popularity after these two students heavily promoted it to friends, relatives, families, and passing strangers. A club for Lomography lovers was then formed in Vienna in 1992 and was named The Lomographic Society International.

1.3 The development and the spreading of lomography

In 1994, lomography invaded the World Wide Web by launching lomo.com. It was also in this year that the first international LomoExhibition is held in Moscow and New York simultaneously, with massive LomoWalls gracing each city, showcasing colorful lomographs from the other.

With the LOMO LC-A’s popularity continuing to rise, the biggest challenge so far for Lomography arose – the Russian manufacturers of the camera decided to stop its production. But the lomographic founders bravely scooted to the LOMO Optics factory in Russia and successfully convinced the factory honchos and then-Vice Mayor Vladimir Putin to continue with the LC-A production!

Also in 1997, the first Lomographic World Congress was held in Madrid and boasted a LomoWall of over 120 meters – it consisted of more than 35,000 analogue photos!

Afterwards there were so many events and discoveries in Lomography. For example, the largest photography convention in the world in 1998, the very first Lomography shop in the world opened in Vienna in 2001, the 10th Anniversary Lomography World Congressin Vienna in 2002, the biggest LomoWallduring the Lomography World Congress in China in 2004 and others. Also many film cameras like fisheye camera, the LOMO LC-A+, the Diana+, the Lubitel+ was created.

2012, 2013 and 2014 years were hugely exciting years for all things Lomography.

In 2012 a whole host of exciting cameras were launched and a big celebration for Lomography’s 20th anniversary was celebrated. To start with, Lomography was re-introducing 110 film to the world. 2013 included creation of the LomoChrome Purple Film, celebration of the first ever Film Photography Day and reinvention of the legendary Petzval Lens. Finally, in 2014 the lomography instant family and art lens family were expand and brand new film was launched.

2. Lomography in the modern world

2.1 Lomography as a new type of the modern art

Today, the technological advances in the field of photography have grown by leaps and bounds. Cameras today produce beautiful, high-resolution images, automatic settings and so on.

You can see your picture immediately, so you have the option to delete it or to keep it, an option not available with earlier film cameras. One the one hand, digital cameras is more functional, convenient and easy to use. They give an opportunity to be a photographer for everyone.

On the other hand, lomography has developed into a photographic technique that ignores the existing rules. When executing conventional photography techniques, a lot of rules must be adhered to (e.g. shutter speed, ISO, and aperture) to create a good photography. Meanwhile, those same rules tend to be ignored when photographing using Lomography techniques. Lomography emphasizes more on producing unique photographs, so the results are quite subjective.

2.2 Characteristic features of lomography

Today, Lomography - motto: "Don't think, just shoot" - has an estimated one million followers around the world. Lomo images are a swish of soft focus and vibrant colours, all captured on film and developed in a lab. Just like the old days.

There are also some lomographic tricks that make photos more bright and unique.

  • Light Leaks

Depending on who you’re talking to, light leaks can be a good thing or a bad thing. Some lomographers love their light leaks, while some despise them so much they tape the heck out of their camera. On the plus side, light leaks do create trippy effects. They can transform mundane photos into otherworldly captures But then again, they can also ruin the photo. Examples are light leaks that get in the way of the subject, or even entirely ruin the whole photo.

  • Unpredictability

This is what makes lomography so fun and so frustrating. Lomo cameras are highly unpredictable. It has a life of its own. That’s why most of the beautiful lomo-photos are ‘happy accidents’. So if both a professional and a beginner in photography takes up lomography for the first time, both are likely equal in the field of lomography.

  • Plastic Lens

The lens is made out of plastic and not glass, so the lens is largely responsible for the quality of the images: vignettes, saturated colors, off hues, and the like. The best way to learn about working with available light is by trying a lomo-camera. These cameras work best in broad daylight, where it’s sunny and warm.

Most lomo-cameras work poorly indoors, cloudy or at night, except if you switch it to bulb mode or if you have flash.

One of the most popular ways to accommodate photos is Lomo-walls. A Lomo-wall is created from a flood of authentic, colorful and awe-inspiring photos. It looks really amazing and psychedelic; all thanks to the funky colors lomography shots create. Part exhibition, part experience, a Lomo Wall is the sum total of thousands of Lomographs taken by Lomographers from every corner of the globe. There are some Lomo-walls in Cologne; Trafalgar Square, London; Beijing, MOMA in New York.

2.3 How to be a lomographer

Whether you are a seasoned photographer or a self-confessed newbie, everyone can be a lomographer. The Lomography Community formulated 10 golden rules when one wants to take successful photos using a Lomo-camera. You can memorize them by heart or break all the rules; either way, is ready to throw your photography inhibitions away.

  1. Take your camera everywhere you go;

Lomography is waiting around the corner to say “Hey good looking, do you want to go for a ride?” The very best photos come from those moments of spontaneity and impulsiveness you can never plan for.

  1. Use it any time – day and night;

Every second is special; every moment is monumental. Start thinking the same way about your photography. Use your camera whenever you’re alive!

  1. Lomography is not interference in your life, but part of it;

Your camera is an extension of you and your desires. As a Lomographer, you are not only photographing a situation, you are an essential part of the situation itself.

  1. Try the shot from the hip;

Your camera loves to be in the moment, experiencing life and the vitality of being. Don’t hide behind it; break free from nonsensical conventions. Don’t look through the viewfinder; forget about safety margins and unnecessary shyness! You’ll end up with all manner of crazy photos you never realized were possible.

  1. Approach the objects of your Lomographic desire as close as possible;

An essential part of your Lomographic existence is to get right to the bottom of things and investigate the world from the inside. It’s about a connection with what you’re shooting. More communication equals better Lomography.

  1. Don’t think;

Shoot, feel, have fun; photograph whatever catches your eye, whatever attracts you. Your best shots won’t be the ones you plot and plan. They’ll be the ones where you grab your camera and shoot blind, without a care in the world.

  1. Be fast;

Let’s face it, life is fast. Each moment lasts just that - A moment. Each second rushes by and you need to react quickly to capture that magical shot. Hold your breath, be brave, take a chance, move, shoot, have fun and act fast – that’s Lomography!

  1. You don’t have to know beforehand what you captured on film;

We don’t take photos because we want to record life like a scientist looking through a telescope. We take photos because we want to relive the passion, excitement, uncertainty and pleasure of that particular moment. So go with the flow, take a snap and see where the photo ends up!

  1. Afterwards either;

Your photos are a constant recording of life in all its anomalies, moods, shapes, colors, faces and blurs. Embrace them and enjoy them, don’t try to analyze them!

  1. Don’t worry about any rules.

It is the most important lesson. Life is about remaining true to yourself, not giving into rules and regulations or conforming to norms. It’s time to discover your own version of Lomography and to take photos which express who you are, not who you are told to be. So, forget about the camera in your hand and just shoot!

Conclusion

After studying all the information about Lomography, after experimenting with it myself, I can definitely say that I have discovered a wonderful and exciting way of taking pictures that helps me to express myself more fully and freely.

I am proud of the fact that lomography was born in my own country – in 1983 in USSR. From there it started spreading around the world gaining popularity among various groups of photographers – both professional and amateur.

Lomography is not just an art in a usual sense, but a real movement that involves various stores, galleries, groups, competitions around the world aiming to spread and support this special art.

Lomography is a special way of thinking, as it motivates a lomographer to be ready to take pictures at any moment, to be spontaneous and creative. It can really become a part of one’s life, making it exciting and thrilling. The key point about lomography is being a part of a situation, being fast, creative and ready to break the rules. It’s about filling your life and pictures with joy, colors, excitement, uncertainty and pleasure of that particular moment.

Here’s a summary of my research in short:

  1. I have studied the history of lomography;

  2. The differences between lomography and the other types of modern photography are clearly identified;

  3. The advantages of lomography have been defined. It’s easy to see all the reasons for one to become a lomographer;

  4. Presentation about lomography was prepared;

  5. I have prepared a photo album of my own lomo pictures.

In conclusion, I’d like to say that I hope that my presentation was helpful and informative to others. I hope that just as I have discovered a wonderful tool to make my life more interesting, others will find it interesting for themselves, try using it too and discover various exciting ways to bring positive emotions and different colors into their life. It doesn’t cost much. All you need is a camera and a desire to try something new. Lomography is a modern art. Try using it and, who knows, what masterpieces of art you will create.
