Introduction

My name is Maria. My surname is Pustogova. I am 9 years old. I am in the third form. This year I have English lessons. In English lessons I learned that in Great Britain children love teddy bears. I like to play with my toys. My favourite toy is a dog. It's interesting to learn what toys my classmates like to play with and what toys our parents and our grandparents liked to play with.

The aim of my work is to learn about favourite toys of British children, my classmates, our parents and our grandparents.

The tasks:

1. To collect a material about British children’s favourite toy.

2. To collect the information about my classmates, our parents and our grandparents' favourite toys.

3. To learn how to describe toys.

I. British Children's Favourite Toy

A Teddy Bear

In Great Britain children love teddy bears. They love all kinds of teddy bears: big and small and all different colours. Some teddy bears wear clothes and hats too. They're very cute.

In 1883 a German woman invented Teddy Bear as a toy animal. Her name was Margarete Steiff. She was a little girl and used a wheel chair. She had innovative mind. She sewed clothes in animals shape. Her little animals were popular and she made more toys. One of them was a bear. It was her hobby to make toys of animals. These toys were elephants, pigs, dogs, cats and bears.

The teddy bear holds a special place not only in British children's hearts but also in many adults hearts.

In Great Britain you can see and buy different teddy bears wearing beautifully detailed handmade costumes inspired by iconic British characters and professions. For example: the Great British Bobby, Florence Nightingale, Sherlock Holmes, Shakespeare and others. People from other countries like to take these toys home as souvenirs.

Studies have shown that cuddling teddy bears evokes a sense of peace, security and comfort. It can lessen the adverse psychological effects of social exclusion and reduce stress.

1.2. Teddy Bear Day

On the 9th of September British children celebrate Teddy Bear Day. This day they like to arrange a Teddy Bear birthday party. They make lovely things for this party. They make a cake in the shape of bear, party masks, invitations and posters.

Teddy Bear Day is not official holiday. But it gives a chance for people to get teddy bears out of the cupboard and make them the center of attention. It's an ideal time to get together with others for a teddy bear's favorite activity, having a picnic.

1.3. Teddy Bear Museum

A teddy bear museum is a museum about teddy bears. There are many teddy bear museums around the world.

England's unique Teddy Bear Museum is situated in Dorchester. It is a fun family museum, with Edward Bear and his family of people-sized bears, in Teddy Bear House. You can meet all the family and enjoy his wonderful collection of teddy bears that can be seen throughout the house. The oldest bear is called Michael as was made in 1906 and is based on the original teddy bear design and pattern.

II. Investigation

I asked 9 girls and 5 boys, 8 mothers and 8 fathers, 8 grandmothers and 7 grandfathers to talk about their favourite toys. I asked questions to get more information.

I like to play with toys. I have got many toys. My favourite toy is a dog. Its name is Jack. It's big. It's grey and white. Jack has got a big head, a fat body, four legs and a long tail. Its nose is black, its eyes are blue and its ears are long. It's very soft and cute. My parents gave it to me for my birthday 3 years ago. I like to play and sleep with my dog.

My classmates like to play with toys, too. They like to play with cars, dolls, Barbie dolls, toy animals and Lego.

Yana's favourite toy is a teddy bear. It's not very big. It's brown. It has a funny face with big blue eyes. It's very soft. She likes to hug it.

Liza's favourite toy is a doll. Her name is Alice. She's big and nice. She has got green eyes and fair hair. Alice wears a long pink dress.

Our parents had got different toys, when they were children. They played with dolls, baby-dolls, paper dolls, tea sets, toy animals, cars.

Babby-dolls and cars were the most favourite toys among our parents.

Our grandmothers liked to play with dolls, toy animals, matryoshka dolls and humming tops, when they were children. Sometimes those dolls and toy animals were handmade. Their parents didn't have enough money and sewed toy animals themselves.

Our grandfathers liked to play with cars, balls and bricks, when they were children. Their cars were made of metal. Their bricks were made of wood. They liked to build different houses, castles and bridges. Also they liked to play football.
