1 Introduction

English is the most widely spoken language in the world: Today, more than 1 billion people around the world speak English. In our dynamic world it is necessary to learn language quickly and to work with English texts with confidence. I have had an experience of parallel reading in two languages (English and Russian) and I have realized that this method allows you to learn English quickly and effectively.

So, I decided to create my own bilingual book and share it with my classmates. It became my aim and I started my experiment.

To achieve the aim, I had to solve the following objectives:

1) to find information about bilingual books;

2) to choose the topic of the story and write it in Russian;

3) to translate the story into English;

4) to prepare the photographs and illustrations for the story;

5) to prepare the book for printing and send it to the typography;

6) to share my book with readers, to collect feedbacks from readers;

7) to make conclusion about the effectiveness of the parallel reading method in learning English.

The problem: We all have been learning English for many years. But not many students like English lessons, can understand well or speak English fluently.

The actuality: We would like to offer the method of reading bilingual books that is much better than traditional memorization and also much more pleasant.

During my work, I used next methods: observation, documentation, work with Internet sources, questionnaires, analysis.

2 What is a bilingual book and how do bilingual books work?

Objective 1

Bilingual books are a wonderful aid to learning a second language. They are sometimes referred to as ‘Dual Language Books’ or ‘Side-by-Side Books’. Bilingual books have two different languages on the same page with the second language being a translation of the first. This allows the reader to compare vocabulary, language style, grammar and alphabetical characters with ease.

Bilingual books have been around since the 1980’s and are widely recognized as a valuable resource for teachers to use with children as they provide a child-friendly bridge to reading and speaking in another language.

The beauty of bilingual books is that they combine language learning with the age-old love of storytelling. So bilingual books provide an opportunity to have fun with language.

One of the most popular methods is to read the story aloud in your native language first, so that you can get to know it. Treat it like any other story book and look at the pictures, talk about the story and interact with the characters. Understanding the story can help in the process of learning the second language.

After the first step go back and read the story again, this time in the second language and then again in the first language. Don’t worry if your pronunciation isn’t quite correct, just have fun trying it out. The idea is to stimulate curiosity and interest in the second language. When you think you are ready, you can try reading the story in the second language only.

Comparing the words, the different sounds are just a few ways to make languages fun and exciting.

So, bilingual books are used for:

building up confidence in a foreign language;

developing reading skills;

expanding vocabulary and understanding grammar;

assessment of language level.

3 How did I create my book?

Objective 2

I enjoy reading books about animals from my childhood. My favourite authors were E. Charushin, K. Paustivskiy, B. Zhitkov, M. Prishvin, V. Bianki and others. They taught me how to be attentive about the nature. When I was 10, I got a present, the book “Stories about the animals” by Ernest Thompson Seton. It was my first meeting with English speaking nature writer and my first bilingual book. Then, I have read “All Creatures Great and Small” by James Herriotand “The Drunken Forest” by Gerald Durrell. Due to these books, I was keen on observing the nature and even wrote a story about a caterpillar for my school project when I was in the 4^th year.

In February 2021, I found a titmouse with a broken wing on the way from school and brought it home. After consulting with an ornithologist and unsuccessful attempts to transfer the bird to the Wild Bird Protection Center, the titmouse got the name Zinziver and stayed at our house. Therefore, the tit became not only my friend but also a hero of my story.

Objective 3

I wrote the story about Zinziver, it was completed in Russian in November 2021. Then it took me a month to translate story into English. My teacher asked her friend from America to correct my English text. She did it and sent us a message: “I corrected the document you sent me. It was indeed very good. My corrections are just to make the reading more enjoyable. Cheers”

Objective 4

For the next step, I prepared photographs and illustrations and made the book layout. My illustrations are interconnected with the storyline. Each stage of events has its own illustration. There are four of them in the book. Illustrations help a reader to imagine the described objects and events, complement the text with details and emotions. The purpose of using photos is to show that the story describes real events from my life.

Objective 5

We went to the school headteacher and told him about the plan to print a bilingual book. The Foundation of Lyceum No. 130 agreed to pay for the printing of the book in the typography. So, we sent the book to the typography and they printed 50 copies.

Objective 6

4 How did I introduce the book to readers?

The book has been printed! Also, I created a pdf version. On the first pages of this version, I placed some information about myself. (Appendix 4) So, it was the time to introduce the readers with my book. I decided to do it in two ways:

to meet the readers and read my book with them.

For example, I visited primary school students and introduced my book to. My classmate Sofa Dyadina helped me.

to send my book via messenger WhatsApp to friends and acquaintances of our family.

5 The analysis of feedback information from readers

My task was not only to introduce readers to my bilingual book, but also to get feedback from them. So, I created a questionnaire in Google Form for readers.

I have received 53 reader responses via the Google Form. The age of the respondents ranged from 8 to 66 years. Almost all readers were from Russia, but I was surprised that 2 reviews came from residents of Montenegro, 1 from Kazakhstan, 1 from Japan, 1 from Germany.

The most responses were positive; many people read a bilingual book for the first time. According to the Google Form the book helped to learn English for 94.3% of respondents. 90.6% of respondents wrote that they want to use bilingual books to learn English in the future. 1 person replied that he would like to have a book with texts in German. I also received positive reviews and feedback from English teachers. (Appendix 5)

I have translated some comments:

I really liked the story; the text is literate and easy to read. The author feels great respect for both Russian and English.

The story is interesting to read, it resembles stories from children's books about animals. It is also convenient that you can try to read it in another language and immediately check yourself in translation.

It was interesting to read, thank you and when i study Russian, i will read it in Russian

A warm story!

A great idea!

As a teacher, I actively use bilingual books when teaching a language. A good story always arouses the student's interest. And interest is the best motivator for overcoming difficulties in learning and mastering new material. I will definitely take this book to work with students, as the story is fascinating and instructive.

Such a touching story! In addition to the benefits of developing foreign language skills, it is also filled with the right meaning, values of kindness and mercy, interesting facts about birds. The development of the plot involves empathy with the characters in such a way that it is impossible to stop without knowing how this story will end. I am proud to know the author personally! I wish you success and further development in this field of activity!

I really liked the work. The overall impression of the work is that the narrative is very sincere, it captures and intrigues. Both stories are read in the same breath equally in Russian and in English. At the same time, each of them unexpectedly and very successfully complements each other, creating one whole. I want to reread, compare and correlate the individual parts of the texts; I think that there are very successful translation options from one language to another.

I enjoyed working with this text. I learned a lot of new words. I learned interesting facts. Bilingual books are one of my favorite ways to learn a language.

I found the book difficult; I couldn't read the words in English. When I know English better, I will read it again.

Thanks to the story, I learned a lot of new words. I realized that there are still good people on Earth.

I liked this story. There are simple words, and many who know English can easily read the story and understand everything.

The story is good, humorous, and kind. Ilya did the right thing by keeping the bird. I liked the fact that Ilya did not pass by the titmouse, but helped to shelter her and she now lives in peace and quiet.

I also want a titmouse.

For the best using bilingual books I made a list of recommendations. You can read it in appendix 3.

6 Conclusion

Objective 7

Based on the results of my research, I can draw conclusions:

1. Bilingual books balance the use of two languages in one book. The parallel text provides a learner-friendly bridge to reading in the second language. This method is excellent for building up confidence in a foreign language. I think having fun is the most important part of learning a language. Bilingual books provide a good base for this on many levels.

2. Creating a bilingual book is a time-consuming and responsible, but very exciting process. I created the bilingual book "The Tit Zinziver"

3. The bilingual book "The Tit Zinziver" received positive reviews and I can say the book is useful for learning English.

4. I believe the bilingual book "The Tit Zinziver» can be used in cross-cultural projects, as well as in school and additional education.

It was the end of February. It was already felt in the air that winter was drawing near the end. During the day the sun was shining very bright and the highest layer of snow was melting. At night the frost arrived and the wet snow froze.

On one of chilly February mornings I left the house. The air was clean and fresh and full of sunlight. The birds were singing in a special way, loudly and joyfully. Tits and sparrows were jumping noisily on the branches¹ of the bushes.

Suddenly, on the road, almost under my feet, I saw a tit. It was lying on its back and didn't move. I crouched² down, the tit jumped up and galloped³ away from me. Now it became clear that the bird had a broken wing. The wing dragged⁴ along the ground behind the tit. I was able to catch the bird and gently carried it home in my hands, hoping that I could heal it.

I was surprised that the tit did not even think to obey⁵. It pinched⁶ my fingers painfully with its sharp beak and struggled⁷ with all its might. But I didn't want to let it out; I endured⁸, because otherwise⁹ the bird would have died very quickly on the street.

My mom was shocked with my new finding. After consulting, we decided to take the bird in for a couple of days until we could come up with a suitable action plan. Yet, nothing is as permanent as what is done temporarily¹⁰. The wild bird rehabilitation center refused to take the bird. And during a consultation with an ornithologist, it turned out that the chances of proper healing of its wing were almost zero.

So, what could we do? We left the tit at home.

I asked my unfortunate new fellow:

- What are we going to do with you now, tit? How should we feed you and look after you? Will you get accustomed¹¹ to captivity¹²? - in response¹³, of course, there was silence. The tit was sitting in a bucket, looking at me and hissing. Yes, it was hissing, and its beak was slightly open. I kept looking at him and thinking.

Our tit has a black cap on its head; a strong short sharp beak, rounded from above, and flattened from the sides. The titmice can break seeds or tree bark with it to get larvae and insects. It's a forest insectivorous¹⁴ bird. The legs of the tit are quite long, strong, with strong fingers and curved sharp claws. The breast is bright, lemon-colored. The stripe in the middle of the chest is black and thick, which meant it was a male.

Once a new lodger has appeared in the house, then it is necessary¹⁵ to give it a name. The name for the tit came to mind immediately¹⁶ - Zinziver. It was called in honor of the tit from the story “Tit’s calendar” of famous Russian naturalist V. V. Bianchi. Long time ago in Russia people called titmice "zinitsa" and even "zinziver". The origin of the bird's name is ascribed to its song - "zin-zin".

By the evening, a new house for Zinziver was ready. The cage was rectangular in shape, stretched¹⁷ horizontally, so that the forest bird had the opportunity¹⁸ to jump a lot from perch to perch. Perches¹⁹, feeders, a drinking bowl, a nest, a hollow and even a bathing place were installed in the cage (as tits do love to swim in nature).

We moved the bird into a cage. At first, Zinziver was very afraid of us and could not adapt to home conditions. So that he could eat and drink water, we covered the cage with a cloth. Under the cloth he became calm and started eating.

As time passed, Zinziver got accustomed to us and his new home. He started singing in the cage. We felt it especially²⁰ in the summer, when the sun rose very early, and he woke up with the first beams of the sun and sang his songs. We managed²¹ to sleep until 6:30 at the most. We joked we have now a feathered alarm clock, that we can neither turned on nor turned off.

Nowadays I let Zinziver out for a walk around the flat. He likes it very much. He is not afraid of anyone, and even gallops bravely past our three dogs. The first thing he jumps into is the kitchen. There he picks up even the most invisible crumbs under the table, brazenly²² bathes in dogs’ water bowls and happily moves into the room to sit on computer wires²³, swing on them as on twigs.

In nature, tits do not live long, only about 3 years. Few of them survive during the harsh winters. Were they well-fed, they would endure²⁴ frigid temperatures²⁵. Therefore, it is important to feed these birds in winter.

In captivity, tits live up to 15 years. Well, Zinziver, even though your wing has not healed properly and you will never be able to fly, live longer, and I will take care of you and make your life as interesting as possible!

Был конец февраля. В воздухе уже чувствовалось, что зима идет к концу. Днём солнце светило очень ярко, и верхний слой снега подтаивал, сугробы проседали. Ночью же ещё ударял морозец и схватывал мокрый снег.

Таким морозным февральским утром я вышел из дома. Воздух был чистым и свежим, наполненным солнечными лучами. Птицы пели уже по-особенному – громко и радостно. Синицы и воробьи шумно прыгали по веткам кустов.

Вдруг на дороге, почти под ногами, я увидел синичку. Она лежала на спине и не двигалась. Я наклонился над ней, синичка вскочила и поскакала от меня прочь. Теперь-то стало понятно, что у птицы было сломано крыло. Оно волочилось за ней по земле. Я без труда поймал синицу и аккуратно в ладонях понёс её домой в надежде, что смогу выходить и вылечить.

Удивило то, что синица и не думала подчиняться. Она больно щипала пальцы своим острым клювом и изо всех сил вырывалась. Но я не хотел её выпускать, терпел, ведь иначе птица очень быстро погибнет на улице.

Своей находкой я очень удивил маму. Посовещавшись, мы решили временно приютить птицу до поиска подходящего плана действий. Но ничто так не постоянно, как сделанное временно. В центре реабилитации диких птиц синицу забрать отказались. А на консультации у орнитолога выяснилось, что шансы правильного заживания крыла практически равны нулю.

Что нам оставалось делать? Мы оставили синицу жить у нас.

Я спросил своего нового несчастного товарища:

- Что же нам теперь с тобой делать, синица? Чем кормить и как ухаживать? Привыкнешь ли к неволе? - но в ответ, конечно, была тишина. Синица сидела в ведёрке, смотрела на меня испуганно и шипела. Да-да, именно шипела, приоткрыв клюв. А я продолжал на него смотреть и думать.

У синицы на голове была чёрная шапочка, клюв короткий, крепкий, очень острый; сверху закруглённый, а с боков сплюснутый. Синица может разбивать им семена или кору дерева, чтобы добывать личинок и насекомых. Это ведь лесная насекомоядная птица. Ноги у синицы достаточно длинные, сильные, с крепкими пальцами и загнутыми острыми когтями. Грудка яркая, лимонного цвета. Полоса посередине груди чёрная и толстая, что означало – это самец.

Раз появился в доме новый жилец, то и имечко надо ему придумать. Имя для синицы пришло на ум сразу – Зинзивер. В честь синицы из любимого мною в раннем детстве рассказа В. В. Бианки «Синичкин календарь». Когда-то на Руси синицу называли «зиницей» и даже «зинзивером». Первоначальное происхождение имени птицы приписывается её песенке – «зинь-зинь».

К вечеру был обустроен новый дом для Зинзивера. Клетку взяли прямоугольной формы, вытянутую по горизонтали, чтобы у лесной птички была возможность много прыгать с жёрдочки на жёрдочку. В клетке были установлены жёрдочки, кормушки, поилка, гнездо, дуплянка и даже купалка (ведь в природе синицы обожают купаться).

Переселили птичку в клетку. Сначала Зинзивер очень нас боялся и не мог приспособиться к домашним условиям. Чтобы он мог поесть и попить воды, мы накрывали его тканью. Так он успокаивался и начинал есть.

Время шло. Зинзивер привык к нам и своему новому дому. Начал петь в клетке. Особенно ощутили мы на себе это летом, когда солнце встает очень рано, и он, проснувшись с первым солнышком, заливался в своих пениях на разные голоса. Поспать нам удавалось максимум до 6:30. Шутили мы между собой: вот такой у нас появился теперь пернатый будильник, который ни включить, ни отключить по собственному желанию не получится.

Сейчас уже я выпускаю Зинзивера погулять по квартире. Он это очень любит. Он никого не боится, и даже отважно скачет мимо наших трёх собак. А скачет он первым делом на кухню. Там он подбирает под столом даже самые невидимые крошечки, нагло купается в собачьих мисках с водой и уже счастливый перебирается в комнату посидеть на компьютерных проводах, покачаться на них, как на веточках.

В природе синицы живут недолго, всего около 3-х лет. Немногие из них переживают суровые зимы во время бескормицы. Будь они сытыми, перенесли бы любой мороз. Поэтому важно подкармливать этих полезных птичек в зимний период.

В неволе же синички доживают до 15 лет. Ну что ж, Зинзивер, хоть твоё крыло и неправильно срослось, и летать ты никогда не сможешь, живи подольше, а я буду ухаживать за тобой и делать твою жизнь максимально интересной!

Приложение № 3.

Рекомендации по использованию книги-билингв для изучения английского языка как иностранного.

Выучите правила чтения слов на английском языке перед использованием билингвальных книг.

Выбирайте для первого чтения любимое знакомое произведение.

Можно сначала прочитать произведение целиком на родном языке, а затем на иностранном. Первоначальное прочтение книги на родном языке может улучшить понимание английского текста.

Ведите тетрадь интересных выражений, фразы в такой тетради можно записывать по категориям.

В случаях появления затруднений в чтении английского текста обращайтесь в аналогичный смысловой кусок произведения на родном языке. Сравнивайте и анализируйте сложные для вас структуры предложений.

Временно пропускайте сложные отрывки. При параллельном чтении вы не потеряете нить рассуждения, даже если наткнётесь на сложный отрывок на английском языке, так как сможете прочитать его перевод.

Выполняйте упражнения на лексику и понимание, если они есть в книге (или придумывайте такие упражнения самостоятельно).

Старайтесь использовать новые выражения, превращая пассивный запас лексики в активный.

Если есть возможность, найти аудиокнигу, слушайте и читайте одновременно или поочередно.

Если вам нравится такой приём изучения английского языка, то уделяйте ему по 20-30 минут в день, и результат не заставит себя ждать.

на книгу Ильи Ульянова «TheTitZinziver (Синичка Зинзивер)»

Небольшая книжка, созданная Ильей Ульяновым, анонсируется автором как рассказ, основанный на реальных событиях. Казалось бы, – что может удивить нас в истории спасения попавшей в беду синички? Однако, это скромное произведение, представленное на менее чем двух десятках страниц текста, захватило и очаровало меня, прежде всего своим непосредственным и искренним стилем изложения. Страницы книги снабжены авторскими рисунками и фотографиями, которые удачно дополняют повествование, а авторские ремарки в ходе повествования дают необходимые краткие сведения об этом виде птиц и знакомят нас, хотя и опосредованно, с самим автором и его семьей. Если говорить о сюжетной линии, то важно отметить, что концовки как таковой в рассказе нет; про него можно справедливо сказать – «to be continued», что вполне оправдано общим настроением произведения, и дает мне, как читателю, простор для воображения.

Еще одна находка автора состоит в том, что история преподносится читателю в виде двух, одинаковых по сюжету, рассказов: сначала мы читаем рассказ на английском, а потом знакомимся с его русским переводом. С моей точки зрения, проделана грандиозная работа по отбору необходимых и наиболее точных языковых соответствий (и так – вплоть до запятой!). Очевидно, что не простое дублирование информации, не пословный перевод; вчитываясь в каждый из текстов, начинаешь понимать, что это два близких по настроению, но, тем не менее, немножко разных произведения. На страницах английского текста есть сноски с переводом некоторых слов на русский язык на случай, если читателю эти слова окажутся незнакомыми. Автор сохраняет одинаковое деление на абзацы в обоих текстах, так что при желании можно с легкостью сравнить английский и русский вариант друг с другом. Именно поэтому эта книжка может стать отличным пособием для ребят, которым интересен английский язык, и кто хочет расширить свой первый опыт прочтения, перевода и написания текстов на нем.

Эта работа также является наглядным примером того, каким образом может пойти перевод отдельных выражений и словосочетаний. Считаю важным добавить, что согласно информации, представленной автором на начальных страницах, у книжки есть свой рецензент – носитель языка, а значит, она прошла своеобразную проверку «на прочность».

Успехов автору, и спасибо ему и всем тем, кто помог ему в создании «The Tit Zinziver (Синичка Зинзивер)»!
