Британцы безмерно гордятся замками, справедливо считая их важной частью уникального наследия своей страны. Каждый из них имеет свою увлекательную историю, завораживающие пейзажи, загадочную атмосферу. Мы считаем выбранную тему актуальной, так как она способствует расширению кругозора и социокультурных знаний об истории и культуре страны изучаемого языка.
Целью моего исследования является знакомство с неизвестной Великобританией, Великобританией мистической на примере Замка Глэмис. Я выбрала именно эту тему, потому что считаю, что паранормальные явления, вселяющие ужас, страх неведения, всегда привлекали и будут привлекать и ученых и простых людей.
Для реализации данной цели я поставила перед собой следующие задачи:
Расширить свои социокультурные знания о Великобритании;
Изучить мистические истории замка Глэмис;
Оформитьрекламныйбуклет «Haunted Glamis Castle Guide».
Гипотеза исследования: информация о существовании призраков в замке Глэмис способствует расширению кругозора людей, интересующихся историейи культурой Великобритании, а также привлекает людей, которые никогда этим не интересовались.
Предмет исследования: замок Глэмис в Шотландии.
Объект исследования: мистические истории замка Глэмис.
Методы исследования: анализ литературы и видеоматериала, проблемно-поисковый метод, исследовательский, метод систематизации и обобщения знаний.
Практическая значимость: данная работа может использоваться на уроках английского языка для ознакомления с культурными ценностями Великобритании.
Brief History
Britain is blessed with haunted castles. In fact, most castles in Britain claim that they have a ghost or two. However, the beautiful Glamis Castle has a deserved reputation as the most haunted castle in Scotland.
Glamis Castle dates as far back as the 13th century and has a wonderful history. According to the earliest records, Glamis Castle was originally a hunting lodge for the Scottish crown.
In 1372, Robert II, the first Stewart King of Scots, gave Glamis to Sir John Lyon of Forteviot, as a reward for his services to the crown. In 1376, Sir John married the King’s daughter, Princess Joanna, and since then the Castle has been visited and lived in by many members of the Scottish and British royal families.
Over the long centuries, Glamis Castle has witnessed many events, so it’s no wonder that many legends and myths surround it.
Ghost Story 1. The Grey Lady
Over 400 hundred years ago the 6th Lord of Glamis married Janet Douglas, a woman of impeccable character and unusual beauty. The family lived happily until Lord Glamis died in 1528. King James V hated Lady Janet’s father and he accused her of witchcraft. After a long imprisonment in a dark dungeon Lady Jane was almost blind. She was burnt alive at Edinburgh Castle.
Her ghost, known as “the Grey Lady”, has been haunting the Castle ever since. The Grey Lady’s favourite place is the Chapel at Glamis. She is supposed to bring good luck if you seen her.
Ghost Story 2. The Secret Chamber
One stormy night, in the 15th century , the second Lord of Glamis was playing cards with his friends. As it was getting late, they went on playing and the clock struck twelve. Just then there was a knock at the door and a tall stranger dressed in black entered the room. “Your Doomsday has come,” he said and shut the door behind him.
Before long the servants heard horrifying sounds coming from the room. A minute later, the stranger, who was the Devil himself, left the room and disappeared, along with the friends’ souls lost in a game of cards. Since then nobody has been able to find this room but the friends’ ghosts are sometimes heard through the castle walls laughing, swearing and shouting.
Ghost Story 3. Macbeth
Glamis Castle was also used by William Shakespeare as a setting for the play Macbeth, the spookiest play in history. The play tells the story of Macbeth who became king by murdering the lawful king and his family. It is in Glamis Castle that Macbeth killed Duncan, the king. It is believed that the ghost of Macbeth started haunting the castle soon after the play was first performed. Many actors believed that taking part in a Macbeth production would bring bad luck and even death. Even today, actors still prefer to refer to the play simply as ‘the Scottish play’ not ‘Macbeth’.
Conclusion
Today, the castle is still home to the Lyon family but it’s also open to the public. Of course, not everybody believes in ghosts. But what would you say if you were woken up by a ghost brushing your hair or by a man with a white face tapping on your window in the middle of the night, as described by some of the castle’s visitors?
“I must own,” wrote Sir Walter Scott when he stayed a night at Glamis, “that when I heard the door after door shut, I began to consider myself as too far from the living, and somewhat too near to the dead …”
True or not, the fascinating stories of Glamis Castle live on and continue to excite people from all over the world.
По моему мнению, в исследовании достигнута поставленная цель: были описаны свидетельства о существовании призраков, а для тех, кто не верит в присутствие потусторонних сил – данные факты были представлены как явления, свойственные человеческой психике. Таким образом, информация о замке Глэмис способствует расширению кругозора людей, интересующихся историей и культурой Великобритании, а также привлекает людей, которые никогда этим не интересовались.
Результаты работы:
Мной собран и изучен теоретический материал по теме исследования.
Я просмотрела видеофильм «Замки с привидениями Британии».
Оформленбуклет «Haunted Glamis Castle Guide».
Данная работа заложила основу для дальнейшего изучения мистических мест Великобритании.
