«Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows»

Education plays a very important role in our life. It is one of the most valuable things a man can get in his life. Being educated, means to know a lot of necessary and useful things for life. If you have a good education, you will enter the best university in Russia or in any foreign country, or get a good job or travel around the world and communicate with other people.

There are a lot of countries in the world. They have different cultures, traditions, customs, and of course, systems of education. It seems very interesting to me to know about the system of Education in Russia.

My favorite books are books about Harry Potter. In these books Harry studied at Hogwarts, the school of witchcrafts and wizardry. It seems very interesting to me to find the similarities and differences between my school and Hogwarts. That’s why I have chosen them to be the subject of my project.

The object of my project is the education in my school and in Hogwarts.

The tasks are:

To get a lot of information about the education in Russia, in my native country

To get a lot of information about Hogwarts

To find the general characteristics and differences between them

To make a report on the theme

To prepare a talk on this subject for other pupils

Our aim is to tell our classmates and schoolmates about these systems of education and their characteristics.

The product of our project is our test “Do you want to study at magical school”.

The history of Education

Education is the best friend. An educated person is respected everywhere. Education beats the beauty and the youth”.

Chanakya

As long as we live we continue to learn, and the education we have when we are young helps us to continue learning We are taught to read and write, and are taught many of the essential facts about the world and shown how to sort them out so that later in life.

The first teachers were fathers and mothers, but very early in the history of man children began to be taught by people other than their fathers and mothers. It is thought that schools first started in Egypt 5,000 to 6,000 years ago, and that it was the, invention of writing which made them necessary. Reading and writing were quite different from the skills used in everyday life, and writing made it possible to store up knowledge which grew with each generation specially trained people were therefore needed to teach it.

Only the sons of nobles attended the first Egyptian schools, which taught reading, physical education and good behaviour. In ancient India the priestly caste decided what should be taught to each of the four castes, or groups, into which people were divided. Only the priestly caste was allowed to learn the Hindu scriptures. In China, until the 19th century, education was organized according to social classes, and consisted largely of learning the scriptures by heart.

The different types of education, comes from ancient Greece. Sparta and Athens were two Greek states. The Spartans, hard and warlike people, gave а purely military education to their children. At the age of seven all boys of noble families were taken from their homes and sent to live in schools. They were kept under a very strict discipline and were taught hunting, military scouting, swimming and the use of weapons. The Spartans despised literature, and some people think they could not even read.

At the very same time, also for the nobles only, the Athenians were building what we call a liberal education - one that helps a man to develop all sides of his nature, helps him to make and appreciate beautiful things and helps him to find the best way of life. They thought it important to educate the body as well as the mind, and had а programme of physical training which consisted of running, jumping, wrestling and throwing the discus. As time went on Athenian education paid special attention to reading, writing and literature and these were taught by a special teacher, known as the "grammatist". Common people were not educated, they were trained in craftsmanship; workmanship, trades.

Greek philosophers, or thinkers, always discussed what education should try to do and what it should include. Plato wrote a book called The Republic, which is one of the best books ever written on education, and since those days Greek ideas have influenced European education, especially secondary and university education.

The Romans were very good at organizing, and they were the first people to have schools run by the government free of charge. Throughout their great empire there was a network of these schools which provided for three stages of education.
At six or seven all boys (and some girls) went to the primary school, where they learned ''three R's": reading, writing, and arithmetic. Most children were not taught more than this, but at 12 or 13, boys of the rich families went on to the "grammar" school to study the Greek and Latin languages and literatures, that is, what had been written in those languages At 16, young nobles who wanted to enter politics or the service of their country went to the schools of rhetoric to be trained in rhetoric, or public speaking.

In Great Britain the first teachers we read about were craftsmen. They taught children to read, write and count, to cook and mend their own shoes. In the early 19th century the main system of teaching was the "Monitor" system. The teacher could manage a class of 100 or more by using older pupils or "monitors'' to help him. The schools had long desks which were sometimes arranged in tiers so that the teacher could see every child in a large class.

1.2 Education in Russia

In Russia, education starts from the early age. Children can start going to kindergarten from the age of two, but this is not a compulsory education. It depends on parents’ decision and child’s wish to attend it.

In the Russian Federation the school education is compulsory. Pupils start going to school from the age of seven and till 16.Mandatory education in Russia is presented by three types of schools: primary, secondary and high.

The primary school teaches its pupils elementary skills, such as reading, writing, counting. Many schools also offer foreign languages or some other special disciplines at this age.

The most important period is the secondary school, which starts from the 4th or 5th grade, depending on school. This is the time when children start learning Biology, Geography, Chemistry, Physics, Computing, and many other new subjects.

At the 9th grade children face a very important period in their life. They have to choose whether to continue school education, or to leave for other types of educational institutions, such as college, specialized schools and else. If the pupil decides to continue studying in high school, which lasts for two years, he can enter the university after school graduation.

Of course, it’s only the general pattern of education in Russia, but there can also be some exceptions nowadays. For example, there are lots of special schools, where they pay attention only to particular subjects. Also, apart from state schools, there are a number of private schools, where education is not free of charge.

When they complete high grades they can either continue to study at school for more 2 years, or go to a professional school where they study not only main subjects, but are able to learn some profession. When school pupils leave school they can try to continue their education in institutes or universities.

I am a pupil and I am in the 5th form. I study at Odintsovo Linguistic Gymnasium. It was built 9 years ago. It is a beautiful, big, 4 stared building with fantastic architecture and design. There are a lot of talented teachers in it. Of course, there are a lot of pupils at school. And we are talented too. We study different subjects, make projects, do sports activities, and create fantastic ideas.

Hogwarts

Then again, maybe some of you have come to Hogwarts with abilities... so formidable that you feel confident enough... to not pay attention.”

First of all, I will tell you about the author of this book “Harry Potter”. Her name is Joanne Kathleen Rowling. Her parents met on a train from King’s Cross Station. In the book it is a gateway into the Wizard World. She was born on the 31 of July in England. This date was the day of Harry Potter’s birth. She attended St. Michael’s primary school. Her headmaster was Alfred Dunn. He was like the headmaster of Hogwarts in the book, Albas Dambledore. As a child, Rowling often wrote fantasy stories. Her teenage years were unhappy, and the character of Hermiona Granger was based on herself.

She graduated from the University of Exeter. She worked as a researcher and bilingual secretary. In 1990 the idea of a story of a young boy, attending a school of wizardry, came into her mind. She wrote this book in a lot of cafes, especially in the “Elephant house”. In 1995 she finished her book. It was a success. She wrote a book about Harry Potter.

Hogwarts was is a fictional British school of magic for students aged eleven to eighteen, It was the name of plant, which Rowling has saw in Kew Garden some time before, although the names "The Hogwarts" and "Hoggwart" appear in the 1954 Nigel Molesworth book How To Be Topp by Geoffrey Willans. Hogwarts was voted as the 36th best Scottish educational establishment in a 2008 online ranking. In the novels, Hogwarts is somewhere in Scotland. The school is depicted as having numerous charms and spells on and around it that make it impossible for a Muggle to locate it.

Muggles cannot see the school; rather, they see only ruins and several warnings of danger. The castle's setting is described as having extensive grounds with sloping lawns, flowerbeds and vegetable patches, a loch (called The Black Lake), a large dense forest (called the Forbidden Forest), several greenhouses and other outbuildings, and a full-size Quidditch pitch. There is also an owlery, which houses all the owls owned by the school and those owned by students. Some rooms in the school tend to "move around", and so do the stairs in the grand staircase. Apparate or Disapparate in Hogwarts grounds, except when the Headmaster lifts the enchantment, whether only in certain areas or for the entire campus, so as to make the school less vulnerable when it serves the headmaster to allow Apparition. Electricity and electronic devices are not found at Hogwarts. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Hermione indicates that due to the high levels of magic, "substitutes for magic (that) Muggles use" such as computers, radar and electricity "go haywire" around Hogwarts. Radios however, make an exception. Rowling explains this by saying that the radios are not powered by electricity but by magic.

Hogwarts is a coeducational, secondary boarding school, taking children from ages eleven to eighteen. Education at Hogwarts is not compulsory, with some students being home schooled as stated in the seventh book. Rowling initially said there are about one thousand students at Hogwarts. She later suggested around six hundred, while acknowledging that this number was still inconsistent with the small number of people in Harry's year.

She further explained that this had resulted from her creating only 40 characters for Harry's year.According to the novels, admission to Hogwarts is selective, in that children who show magical ability will automatically gain a place, and squibs cannot attend the school as students (though they can work there in other roles, as Argus Filch does). A magical quill at Hogwarts detects the birth of magical children and writes their names into a large parchment book, but there is no admission test because "you are either magical or you are not." Every year, a teacher checks this book and sends a letter to the children who are turning eleven.

Each student is allowed to bring a cat, toad, rat or owl. Along with the acceptance letter, first-year students are sent a list of required equipment which includes a wand, subject books, a standard size 2 pewter cauldron, a set of brass scales, a set of glass or crystal phials, a kit of basic potion ingredients (for Potions), and a telescope (for Astronomy). The Hogwarts uniform consists of plain work robes in black, a plain black hat, a pair of protective gloves, and a black winter cloak with silver fastenings. Each uniform must contain the wearer's nametag. First years are not allowed a broomstick of their own, though an exception to this rule is made for Harry in his first year after he demonstrates an excellent ability as a Seeker in Quidditch.Hogwarts is divided into four houses, each bearing the last name of its founder: Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff.

1.4 Similaritiesand differences between my school and in Hogwarts.

When I started to read the book it was very interesting to me to know about this fantastic world, to read about this magic school and its traditions, about the atmosphere in the school, holidays and competitions. I tried to imagine myself in this school. It was very interesting. I want to find similaritiesand differences between my school and in Hogwarts. I write all the results in the table.

My school

Hogwarts

Pupils are divided into classes: first, second, third ….., and every class has its own letter, for example A,B,V, G.

Hogwarts is divided into four houses, each bearing the last name of its founder: Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff.

At PE lessons pupils play different games: football, volleyball, basketball.

Each house also has its own Quidditch team that competes for the Quidditch Cup. And of course flying lessons.

The day begins at school with breakfast in the canteen.

The day begins at Hogwarts with breakfast in the Great Hall.

The classes last 45 minutes and between classes 20 minutes break. Classes end at 4 o’clock.

There are two long morning classes with a short break in between them for students to get to their next class. The classes are about one hour in length, with occasional double periods lasting two hours. Classes end around five o'clock.

In Russia we have 20 minutes break and for it we have soup, meat, mashed potatoes porridge, salad or juice.

The house-elves at Hogwarts amongst other duties provide all food to students and staff. They cook a wide variety of dishes especially at the feasts. The various dishes are prepared in the kitchens directly below the Great Hall. Within the kitchen as four long tables directly aligned with the house tables in the great hall above; at meal times the food is magically transported up, giving the façade of appearing for the students.

It’s 4 stored building with a lot of classes and its shape is circle.

Hogwarts Castle and its Grounds are home to many secret areas as well as well-known and well-used places.

Pupils may have magical pets.

All the pupils have a sorting ceremony with magic hat.

My research

Most of all, I would like to know the opinion of my classmates and schoolmates about Hogwarts and about a chance to study magic. That’s why I made a test about Hogwarts and about a chance to study magic and asked the pupils from 4th, 5th and 11th forms about it. I want to know “Is it an interesting to study magic for them or not?” I gave a test with 10 questions in it. You may see an example of this test and questions.

Do you want to write all tasks with magic stick?

10. Do you want to study at magical school?

After the research I made the diagrams of 4th, 5th and 11th forms. First of all, I noticed that a lot of pupils from the 4th form wanted to study magic, they wanted to have lessons outside, like flying lessons or Quidditch to have many things to do, like being a wizard or play in Quidditch team, and I didn’t forget about some different animals’ languages like snakes’ language, owls’ language, animals’ language. They wanted to have their own pets like, owl or frog or eagle or cats. And if the pupil can finish this school with excellent marks, you will have a chance to enter any magic university in any foreign country. I think it is a very good chance to have brilliant education. But of course, there are a lot of difficulties too, but to my mind, not many pupils know about it, that’s why they have this fantastic dream and don’t think about anything else, because they read only first book, and they didn’t know, what would happen next. As a result, 80% of the pupils want to study magic and only 20% are not so sure to have this chance.

Then, I noticed that a lot of pupils from the 5th form wanted to study magic, they wanted to have lessons outside, like flying lessons or Quidditch to have many things to do, like being a wizard or play in Quidditch team, and I didn’t forget about some different animals’ languages like snakes’ language, owls’ language, animals’ language. As a result, 95% of the pupils want to study magic and only 5% are not so sure to have this chance. In my class all the pupils like this book very much.

At last, I saw that not so many pupils from the 11th form wanted to study magic, of course they wanted to have lessons outside, like flying lessons or Quidditch to have many things to do, like being a wizard or play in Quidditch team, and I didn’t forget about some different animals’ languages like snakes’ language, owls’ language, animals’ language. And if the pupil can finish this magic school with excellent marks, you will have a chance to enter any magic foreign university in any foreign country. I think it is a very good chance to have brilliant education.

But of course, there are a lot of difficulties too, but to my mind, not many pupils know about it in the 4th or 5th forms, that’s why they have this fantastic dream and don’t think about anything else, but when they are in the 11th form, they think about their future and about university, they want to go, and of course, about difficulties, they may have in magic school. As a result, 60% of the pupils want to study abroad and 40% are not so sure to have this chance. But maybe some of them, believe in magic in 11th form, and In a secret, they want to go to this school country and study this fantastic knowledge.

On the last diagram you may see all the results of my research. In conclusion, I would like to say, that education in magic school is a fantastic chance in the life, but if you haven’t got it you will be an excellent pupil and have brilliant education in your own country.

Conclusion

According to my research, I know that these are two systems of education have differences, but they have the general aim- to study pupils in real and magic world and it the most valuable, important and useful thing in our life. To my mind, to study magic is a fantastic chance in the life, but if you haven’t got it you will be an excellent pupil and have brilliant education in your own country in real world.
