Introduction

Though I have been learning English for 7 years I couldn’t understand and speak English enough. So, the first reason why I have chosen this theme for my research is that I would like to improve my knowledge.

Second , I would like to show you the way to learn English which helped me, because this one was really interesting and effective.

Well, I am planning to find out if it is really a good strategy? Is it a good addition, or is it necessary? Does watching movies help to learn any language?

So, I have a lot of questions that made me start my research. I would like to find out the truth about the system of learning foreign language with movies.

So, the aim of my research work is to research the effectiveness of the method of studying foreign languages with the help of the entertainment industry .

My hypothesis is the following: a lot of people use movies to learn foreign languages in a nowadays already, the method of studying foreign languages with the help of the entertainment industry is effective and can increase the students' level of practical knowledge of a foreign language.

During my research I want to fulfill several tasks:

1. To study existing non-standard methods of studying foreign languages.

2. To systematize the received information and use it to obtain results and draw conclusions.

3. To develop a questionnaire on the effectiveness of the method of studying foreign languages with the help of the entertainment industry.

4. To investigate the effectiveness of this method based of the answers received by the respondents.

5. To compile statistics of the results of the conducted survey in order to determine the effectiveness of the experiment.

6. To create a practical application for people who begin to learn foreign languages with the help of the entertainment industry.

For my research I have planned to use the following methods:

  • studying the Internet resources

  • observing real life events

  • interviewing people who use this method for a long time

The relevance of my research is that modernity is looking for different ways of learning foreign languages and at the same time seeks to reduce the costs of time resources, and this project is offering a convenient and effective way of learning foreign languages.

I think my research work has some practical value. It causes more interest in learning and at the same time reduces the time spent on training. In addition, on the basis of the explored topic, I created practical materials: a practical application for people who want to learn foreign languages with the help of the entertainment industry and list of convenient websites which can help you to learn English by this method.

  1.
    1. The entertainment industry in our life

Nowadays there are many different method of learning foreign languages, so important for communication, work and entertainment. About the last just I would like to tell. It would seem like the opposite of learning thing can be used in this way? That's what I'm going to show you my project. So, welcome to the show!

People of all ages and interests in varying degrees, have their own interests, many of which are part of the entertainment industry, a huge part of human culture. In particular, I am talking about movies, music and art in general. If you calculate what temporary resources are spent on these things, the numbers will get is unthinkable. So why do not use them not only for fun but for good?

  1.
    1. Studying English by movies and TV series

You've probably heard that many people prefer to study English by movies and series of other types of training. Foreign film is not only foreign in terms of the country of production, but also in terms of the language used. We can see in our entertainment industry that art pieces from other countries are much preferable. As we all know, foreign movies are so popular here in our country, we are getting interested in foreign films because stories were usually based from bestselling novels, natural phenomenon and futuristic plot. We watch movies for relaxation from stress, entertainment, and learning or reinforcing one’s linguistic skills in relative languages. The popularity of foreign films in general can be attributed to the fact that they use the most modern technology. People often forget to realize how much of an influence films and the messages and images on screen can have on our day to day lives.

  1.
    1. The results of a survey

Many people of my age are using movie in the original language with subtitles, and music of their favorite artists as method of learning. To confirm this words, I show you the results of a survey of more than five hundred people practicing things that I say. How I managed to hold such large-scale work? Again, thanks to the entertainment industry and thematic interest groups. So, I created a question in one of the largest thematic groups of the popular films and TV series. I asked to join people who like using the language learning through movies for some time, and those who are just interested in its application. I asked one question that would help me figure out if is this method effective. In the experiment participated five hundred twenty-one. So, as much as 74% of respondents confirmed that watching movies and TV shows in the original language, they were better able to understand the English language. The remaining opinions were divided into nearly equally parts – some of them are not strongly interested in this method, while others did not see any obvious result. (Application1).

Thus, we can say that this method is really effective. Moreover, books can't teach you how to understand the speech. Listening to native speakers speaking from the screens will teach you to distinguish the speech and also learn to distinguish accents and learn a large number of different accents and the most usable words in everyday life.

I would also like to present a few example based on my personal experience. I interviewed my friends, a long time watching a movie and TV shows this way. Indeed, the level of English was much better. Interestingly, depending on the viewed each developed a certain accent. One Irish accent, the other British deliberately listened to it, I have more American pronunciation. Plus add an additional example. Some time ago I decided to start learning the Norwegian language and, in particular, used for this Norwegian series. After several weeks of watching one of them and listen to contemporary Norwegian music, I can conduct a simple conversation in that language. As expected, the show was popular and used most often in daily speech, phrases, definitions and words that constituted the basic part of my vocabulary.

  1.
    1. Advantages of the method

I want to tell you about the advantages of such a method, and to offer effective techniques for working with video. You will learn how to teach English from movies and TV shows correctly and efficiently.

Who is trying to learn English via movies and TV shows?

The training video will especially enjoy the visuals — for those who like to get information through the visual channel of perception.

Advantages of the method are:

5.1. You learn and have fun at the same time.

Did you know that 82% of English learners are using videos in teaching language?

Watching movies and series in the original will make you a good motivator, because you can watch the fascinating video in the break between monotonous exercises on grammar. In addition, you get a unique opportunity to see the new movie or the next season of the show before anyone else. It is no secret that dubbing is usually done a few months after the release of pictures in the light, and the translation is not always successful. Studying the English language, you will be able to hear the real voice of your favorite actor or watch movies or TV shows that are not translated into Russian language.

5.2. You develop the skill of perception of the English language.

Watching videos in English is one of the best ways to improve the perception of the English language. If you feel difficult to perceive what the characters speak about, then use subtitles. If every day to pay careful viewing at least 15-20 minutes (you can split video into fragments), then after 2-3 months you will begin to understand phrases and characters without subtitles. So, learning English movies helps train the ears to understand different accents and intonations of speech.

5.3. You increase your vocabulary

While watching the show or movie you can significantly expand your vocabulary. About the meaning of many words you will guess from the context, remembering when to use new vocabulary. You use best method of learning words and expressions in context. You see the situation in which characters live and using specific phrases and words, so that later you will know when and how to use the knowledge.

5.4. You learn colloquial word forms, phrasal verbs and slang.

Words in the video are told by native speakers. They use in their speech the colloquial contracted forms of words, phrasal verbs, and slang words. So if you want to understand the aliens in a normal environment, I advise you to definitely watch movies and TV shows.

5.5 You learn natural speech

While watching video you listen as the sounds of live connected speech, with what intonation should speak where to make logical pauses, and accent. In mind absorbed this information, and gradually you will unconsciously begin to copy the speech of native speakers to use certain phrases, to follow their rate of speech, intonation, etc.

5.6. You learn to understand the humour of native speakers

Did you know that 79% of people are using video in the study of English, prefer to watch movies and TV shows? I agree, that sometimes we can not understand English humor, sometimes we think it is still strange and incomprehensible, because a considerable portion of the jokes are based on wordplay. To become better acquainted with the humour of the British or the Americans, watching a good Comedy and humorous TV series like "Friends".

5.7. You study the peculiarities of another culture

While watching movies or TV series, you can get acquainted with the customs, holidays, traditions, or the mentality of the native speakers. Remember, because of the movie "Home Alone" we all know what it means for Americans Christmas. And all in the same series "Friends" perfectly illustrates the tradition of celebrating Thanksgiving Day.

  1.
    1. A practical plan of learning the language with movies (Application 2)

Here, for example one of the plans of learning the language with movies:

1. Watching in original language with Russian subtitles

2. Watching in original language with English subtitles

3. Watching in original language without any subtitles

Following this plan you should realise this method step by step:

Step1. Select the appropriate complexity video.

So teaching is not a misery, choose the appropriate materials. I've compiled a visual list that will help you to choose series, animated series, movie or cartoon, depending on the level of your knowledge. If you are experiencing difficulties with speech perception by ear, I advise you to watch some familiar movies. Select a video from those already seen in Russian. So you will understand the story and not have to constantly press the pause and check with a dictionary (Application 3 ).

Recommended movies and cartoons for different levels of English:

Muzzy in Gondoland – Casper The Friendly Ghost – Pocahontas – WALL•E – Indecent Proposal – My Big Fat Greek Wedding – The Holiday – The notebook – Garfield – The Lion King – Frozen – The last song – Love actually – Tangled – Miracle on 34th Street – Harry Potter – Forrest Gump – Fight club – Eat, Pray, Love – Batman – Shrek – The Berenstein Bears – Breakfast at Tiffany's – Superman – The Terminal – Die hard – Rocky – The Shawshank Redemption – The Matrix – Pirates of the Caribbean – Star Wars – The Green Mile – The Lord of The Rings – Interstellar – the Prestige – American History X – The Gone with the Wind – Requiem for a Dream – Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Recommended TV shows and cartoons for different levels of English:

Living English – The Men Called Flintstone – The Jungle Book – Winnie the Pooh – Aladdin– ALF – Xena: Warrior Princess – Smallville – Modern family – Misfits – The IT Crowd – Adventure Time – Chip 'n' Dale – Friends – Desperate Housewives – The Walking Dead – The Vampire Diaries – The Mentalist – Bones – Vikings -- House MD – Doctor Who – The Big Bang Theory – Game of Thrones – How I met Your Mother – Sherlock – House of cards 2.

Step 2. Turn on the subtitles

Did you know that 26% of English language learners by watching the movies and TV shows prefer the TV show "Friends"? Sometimes a man is quite difficult to get used to the sound of an unfamiliar voice and even familiar words are not captured by ear. Then it makes sense to resort to using subtitles. I recommend to use English subtitles. Gradually you will begin to understand the words of the characters without the accompanying text, then the captions will need to disable.

Step 3. Write out and learn unfamiliar words

If you don’t want just entertain, but also to benefit from the view, you should work with the dictionary. If they encounter an unfamiliar word, stop the video, open an online dictionary and write down the whole sentence with the new vocabulary and translation. Thus you will learn words in context, learn to use them appropriately. If you quite often hear some phrase or turn in the video, so it's often used vocabulary. Write it in your dictionary, learn and try to use in the conversation classes of English or native speaker.

Step 4. Review video

If the film or TV series you met a lot of new words and you want to remember them, suggest the following technique. Try to learn a new vocabulary after watching, and then wait 3-7 days and revise the video. Only it does not use a dictionary and subtitles. This technique will help you not only to extend vocabulary but also to improve the understanding of speech by ear, if you can't watch the video without subtitles.

Step 5. Imitate native speakers

Do you want to work on pronunciation? Repeat the phrase for a character of series. Try to imitate not only the pronunciation of sounds, but also intonation, speaking style.

Step 6. Find a convenient website for watching videos

If you want to watch movies or TV shows with subtitles, you will like the website www.http://ororo.tv. On it you can not only watch videos but also to learn new words from the subtitles: click the mouse on the unknown word in the subtitles, and you offer options for translation into Russian language. However, free to enjoy the view in just 1 hour in a day. For those who like to watch movies or a few episodes of a TV show in a row, there is an alternative website hamatata.com. It serves to watch movies and TV shows with subtitles and without. If you need subtitles, you install the free browser extension, then any of the video you can watch on the previous website: subtitles by clicking on the word POPs up its translation into the Russian language. Watching movies and TV series with subtitles in our days is free.

Step 7. Use the technical possibilities of the player

If the speech of the characters of the show or film seems too fast and difficult for you to perceive it by ear, use the slow speed of playing. This option is in almost every modern video player. The sound is not distorted, but it will be much easier to understand what the characters say . Can you not caught some expression? Feel free to click on pause and listen to the text again. If you watch the film not only for entertainment but for learning, it is desirable to try to understand the maximum sentences.

Step 8. Try to watch movies without English subtitles

Once your ears adapt to the sound of the English language, try to watch movies without subtitles. It is easy to do it on foreign sites such as www.http://primewire.ag.

Step 9. Watch a special training video

You tube presents a variety of videos for those who want to learn English via movies. Thanks to the videos with excerpts from familiar to all of us of movies you will be able to learn some phrasal verbs, interesting expressions, and interesting phrases.

Step 10. Focus on your interests

Did you know that 24% of English learners using video prefer the movie "Harry Potter"? To force myself to learn English — it is useless and even harmful. Therefore, do not see something you're not interested, just wastes precious time. If after 10-15 minutes you find yourself that a break from the browsing, look for things that interest you. Perhaps you will be closer to news or entertainment videos, and promotional videos. Find "their" and go for it!

Step 11. Use this knowledge

Your work will be generously rewarded with increased knowledge of the language only on the condition that you will actively apply the obtained knowledge. Speak English as often as possible and try to insert into their speech words and phrases gleaned from the video.

  1.
    1. How to improve and raise your level even more

As I already said, watching movies is not going to bring you a lot of progress in your learning as a beginner. This is because beginners need a reduced diet of information in a format that’s easy to digest, which is the opposite of movies. When you get to an intermediate level in a language, you can speak with and understand native speakers fairly well – holding a conversation is not too hard. Getting beyond that stage, however, presents a whole new challenge.

Although being able to chat with native speakers in a foreign language sounds like a distant dream to many people, it’s not the end of the road. Far from it. When you chat with people, the topics you talk about are generally restricted to the very familiar (weather, the place you live, your job).

If you want to improve and raise your level even further, towards an advanced level, you need to get a lot more exposure to language than you can get from everyday conversation. And how can you do this? Reading books is one way. Watching movies is another. Watching movies is a different experience for intermediate level speakers and above. A lot of what is said can be understood, meaning that you’re free to focus on smaller details of the language: colloquial expressions, slang, less common vocabulary. This is something you can really benefit and learn from.

We’ve been talking about watching movies, but, in fact, I always recommend watching TV series instead of movies. There are a number of reasons for this, but the most important thing is that TV series are repetitive. Over an entire series you see the same characters, in similar situations, talking about similar topics, and, critically…using similar words, phrases and expressions. This repetition is a gift for the language learner, because repetition is the most important element in learning anything. Short, 30-minute episodes are also far easier to digest than movies and make it more practical to watch and re-watch.

Some people say watching movies with subtitles is helpful, others claim it only distracts from the actual screen action.

As a lot of people confuse watching movies for enjoyment, rather than for learning, it’s really important to examine this. Put simply, if you’re watching for enjoyment then of course it’s better to have subtitles, otherwise you won’t understand what’s going on! However, don’t be under any illusions! If you’ve got the subtitles on (in either language), you’re then essentially practicing reading rather than listening. If you want to learn from the movies, you need to turn the subtitles off. Doesn’t that make it too hard? Well, yes! And that’s why it’s not a particularly valuable activity for beginners.

One practical solution, again harnessing the power of repetition, is to watch one movie a number of times. For the first couple of times, watch with English subtitles, so you know what’s going on and understand the story. After that, turn the subtitles off. Your knowledge of the plot and actual lines from the movies will support you and make it more likely that you’ll make sense of what you hear in the foreign language.

Does watching movies help to learn languages?

The first thing to say is that watching movies in another language is not a bad thing. However, in many cases, people who are trying to learn another language “default” into watching a lot of movies, mostly because it’s an enjoyable way to get exposure to the language. The important question to ask is: “If I’m serious about learning a new language, how should I use my time better?”

Watching movies can help, sure. It gives you the chance to listen and get accustomed to the sounds of the language. But as a beginner, you need a lot more than that. You need to acquire a lot of basic vocabulary, you need to read and listen to simple texts that are simple enough to allow you to notice key features of the language, and you need to start actually practicing the language, through speaking and/or writing, so you can get feedback on how you’re doing. Movies don’t give you that.

People in movies use advanced, native-speaker language that is totally irrelevant for the beginner. Language in movies is fast for you to be able to break it down, analyze and learn from. Movies are also not easy to manipulate for study purposes. A short dialogue in a textbook, for example, is much easier to take in, look at repeatedly and comes with a translation or vocabulary list to help you to understand it.

Finally, watching movies is a completely passive activity. And that’s only half of the language learning equation. You need to be producing language as well as just listening to it. You may be reading this and thinking: “OK, but that doesn’t make watching movies a bad thing!” And you’d be right. But that’s why I asked earlier how you’re using your time. If you’re spending 6 hours per week watching movies and 18 hours studying – that’s about right. But if you’re like many people, you’re watching a few movies every week, but only 20-30 minutes actually sat down engaged in proper study.

  1.
    1. Conclusion

My hypothesis was: the method of studying foreign languages with the help of the entertainment industry is effective and can increase the students' level of practical knowledge of a foreign language.
