Introduction
‘When the Queen says 'well done’, it means so much’
Prince William
Every child is fond of reading books about beautiful queens and princesses, brave kings and handsome princes. Every little girl dreams about getting married with a prince and living in a palace. And I am not the exception! Wonderful dresses, fairytale palaces, uncountable number of servants, cars and carefree life! This is the description of a mythical queen’s life. And what do we know about real kings and queens that live in our modern society? I asked myself this question, and I didn’t know the answer. It is very interesting for me to find out the number of real royalties nowadays and investigate their duties. For example, I would like to investigate the life and duties of Queen Elizabeth II.
Why do British people spend so much money on their Queen? I think this is a very interesting question. That is why this theme is extremely actual.
Purpose: to investigate the degree of royalties’ importance and necessity in our society.
Object: Queen Elizabeth II.
Objectives:
to find out the number of real queens, kings and sultans all over the world;
to investigate the biography of Queen Elizabeth II;
to describe how the Queen must look like;
to investigate the Queen’s duties during the day;
to answer the question: Do I want to be a queen?
Hypothesis: I guess that there are still a lot of representatives of royalty. I suppose that they play an important role in their countries’ destinies. I assume that their lives have nothing in common with a fairy tale. I think that to be a queen nowadays is a hard life-long work.
I suppose my project will be closely connected with different school subjects such as: History, Geography and Maths. I hope to improve my knowledge in English.
Chapter 1
How many kings, queens, sultans are there all over the world nowadays?
I started my research with counting the number of real kings, queens, sultans and emperors all over the world nowadays. It was a big surprise for me to find the information that there are 2 co-princes, 2 queens, 1 Pope, 14 kings, 3 princes, 1 duke, 2 sultans, 2 emirs and 1 emperor! There are 29 persons who have received their titles after their royal parents. The eldest representative of royalty is Queen Elizabeth II. You can see the results of my research in Appendix 1.
I decided to count. I opened the political map and counted all countries. There are 195 countries in our modern world. 28 countries make 14.36 % of them. I think it is a rather large number.
Conclusion: there are 29 persons with royal ranks in our modern world. The eldest one is Queen Elizabeth II. She devoted almost all Her life to Her country and Her citizens. While finding this information I was deeply touched by Her Majesty’s photos. After that I made the decision: I want to knowmore about Queen ElizabethII.
What are the most important events and dates in Her Majesty’s biography?

What to put on if you are the Queen?
Remember the following rules.
Moderation in everything
There is one basic rule for the royal family members: clothes should not be flashy and provocative. Elegance is the most important thing. Deep cuts are prohibited. Dresses should always cover the shoulders. Open shoulders are only for the evening event, but in this case long gloves should hide some part of the arms and hands. The ideal skirt should touch the knees or be slightly shorter. You can’t even speak about mini-skirts!
The Queen’s hat is Her status subject. It illustrates the importance of its owner. The hat is like the crown. Almost every hat is specifically made for the event. The back of the Queen’s hat shouldn’t even touch the collar, the hat’s crown mustn’t hinder to get out of the car, the hat’s fields mustn’t overlap the visibility.
One of the Queen’s records deals with Her hat collection: during Her Majesty’s reign more than 5,000 hats were collected!
Practical case
It is recommended to wear a pencil-dress, but it should not be a sheath. There is such a rule in the Royal Protocol, a dress or a skirt mustn’t be lifted up by the wind.
Lady in stockings
In public places ladies are required to wear tights or stockings. The tights must be flesh-colored or light-gray, without decorations or patterns. These stockings do not attract attention to feet. That is important during the event, when it is necessary to stand for a long time.
Rules for heels
Shoes shouldn’t attract attention. Ideal shoes are classic, closed and with a tapering cape. The Protocol doesn’t recommend high heels and narrow shoes. The Queen should symbolize the stability and confidence. How will it look if the Queen totters on high heels?
A free hand
The Queen must choose a clutch bag or a hand bag on a chain. One hand should be always free and ready to greet people, shake hands or wave a hand from the balcony.
Luxury for the Queen
The clothes should be made of qualitative natural materials. The exception is fur. It is considered to be too luxurious, so the Protocol does not recommend fur, except in special cases. However, the fur collar on the coat is allowed. Fur as the accessory is permitted. But the fur coat - it's too nobby.
No black
Black color is almost prohibited for the royal family. Black is only for mourning. It is believed that the color tradition for clothes introduced Queen Mother during the Second World War: she wanted to add joy and optimism wearing colorful clothes. If the Queen wants to wear a dark color, she chooses dark blue or dark grey.
An example of breaking "no black" rules was the future Princess Diana’s first official event after the engagement to Prince Charles. She appeared in a black dress, exposing her shoulders. Her dress was strictly criticized.
Hairstyles
The recommendations affect hair too. It must be long enough to make a bundle, or - short.
It is not attractive when the hair closes the Queen’s face on photos in windy weather.
Be careful! Accessories
There are strict rules for jewelry and make up. It is recommended to wear wedding rings. During the day you can wear a pearl necklace or a brooch. In the evening a tiara is allowed, a more expressive necklace or a necklace with a bracelet.
The make-up rules prohibit red lipstick and dark and too bright eyeshadow. The main condition for the Queen’s makeup: Elizabeth II should do it Herself. Her Majesty doesn’t use much mascara, tonal cream and nail polish. She uses lipsticks. Her favorite lipstick is The Balmoral Lipstick. The lipstick was made for the day of Her Majesty’s inauguration.
You can enjoy the Queen’s elegance in Appendix 3.
Conclusion: royal etiquette in England is quite strict. The British royal family carefully follows it. Elizabeth II is a modern symbol of elegance and stylishness.
What does the Queen do every day?
All days of the Queen are the same. Her Majesty wakes up at 8 a m. The maid brings a tray with a cup of tea to the royal chambers. This cup’s handle is always turned to the right, the spoon on the saucer lies strictly diagonally. The maid puts the tray and opens the curtains. Sunlight comes into the bedroom and the sunrays touch the Queen’s face. At the same time Her Majesty’s dogs come into the bedroom.
The Queen drinks Her morning tea, talks to the dogs, at this time the maid fills the bath. Her Majesty takes the bath, and at 9 o'clock leaves the bedroom and goes to the dining room.
Here the Queen has breakfast. The morning meal is very modest – a buttered toast with a very thin layer of marmalade and a cup of tea. During Her breakfast Elizabeth II looks through newspapers. "Times", "Daily Telegraph", "Daily Mail", "Sporting Life" are Her favorite ones. She always looks the section dedicated to the races. Her Majesty loves this sport.
At 10 am the Queen’s working day begins. She sits in Her study and reads letters that Her Majesty gets from all over the world. Someone asks for help, someone asks the original recipes of the dishes that were served to the royal table at the last official banquet.
Then Elizabeth II opens the famous red suitcase, reads government documents and writes Her royal signature on them. This is a formality. The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy, the Queen is Head of State, but has no power. Elizabeth II signs all the laws passed in the Parliament, but in practice She never refuses to sign the laws.
From 11: 00 officials visit Her Majesty. They are diplomats, judges, ministers. This ceremony lasts for at least 2 hours.
After that it is time for lunch. Elizabeth II has sandwiches with salmon, cucumbers and chicken.
After lunch She rests a little and begins an official reception.
Dinner begins at 20:15 pm. The whole family gathers at the table. In England, the evening meal is very important. Very rarely Her Majesty has dinner alone. This happens when all the royals leave for a business trip.
After dinner Elizabeth II watches TV and goes to bed at midnight. She has followed this timetable nearly 60 years.
Conclusion: I think it is extremely difficult to do the same things every day. I thought the Queen’s life is careless. I wasn’t right! I have just understood that Her Majesty’s life is daily work. And this work is definitely hard.
Is Elizabeth II as reach as a queen from a fairy tale?
Bloomberg reports Queen Elizabeth II has a fortune of 425 million dollars. Just compare! The richest woman in Europe, Liliane Bettencourt, has 32 billion dollars.
The agency adds that it is only individual fortune of Her Majesty. The fortune is divided into: investments ($ 75 million), the inherited part from Her mother (110 million), the stamp collection (75 million) and more. According to Bloomberg, the investments should bring from 5 to 7.5 per cent per year.
ITAR-TASS says each citizen spends 1 dollar a year on the Royal Family’s palaces, visits to foreign countries, servants and so on. In spite of the fact that Elizabeth II is Head of State but She has no power, Her Majesty enriches people.
The agency Brand Finance has estimated the contribution of the Royal Family in the economy. Tourists buy a countless number of souvenirs with Royal pictures and symbols every day. The main worth of Royal members is their existence: events in Royal family always attract a lot of tourists to the country.
Will Prince Charles be as successful as Elizabeth II? I hope, He will.
Conclusion: Elizabeth II is a very reach woman, even if we don’t count the property which She can’t sell. She is a real symbol of Her country and this fact earns a lot of money.
5 amazing facts about Elizabeth II from my point of view.
Collecting information for my project I came across some really amazing
facts. They surprised me a lot and I decided to write them down.
The UK celebrates the Queen's Birthday twice a year.
The date of Her birth is April 21, 1926. Her Majesty celebrates Her birthday twice a year: formally, in April, and officially – on the first, second or third Saturday of June.
Her Majesty owns all the swans, living on the Thames and all dolphins in the UK.
According to the information of the Royal family’s official website, the reigning monarch is the owner of all unmarked swans living in the waters of the Thames and all dolphins in the UK. This ancient tradition has reached our days.
Elisabeth II can drive any car without a driving license.
Every driver's license issued in the United Kingdom is given by the name of the Queen – while She is the only person in the country who can drive vehicles without a license. Her Majesty learned to drive during the Second World War, when She served in the ambulance.
Her Majesty hasn’t got a passport.
According to the law, every passport issued in the United Kingdom is given by the name of the Monarch. Her Majesty is the only person in the country who hasn’t got an identity document. Moreover, it does not hinder Her to travel abroad.
Another amazing advantage of the British monarch is a personal ATM machine.
It is placed in Buckingham Palace. The most reliable bank in the UK, Coutts, provides the Queen with cash.
Chapter 2
Can I live one day as a queen?
Writing about one typical day of Elizabeth II decided to try: can I live one day as a queen?
I took the Queen’s timetable and started. My friend was very interested in my project and was happy to help me. You can see my photo report in Appendix 4.
My friend woke me up at 8 o’clock in the morning.
She opened the curtains and the sunlight touched my face.
Christina brought me a cup of tea because Elizabeth II always drinks a cup of tea in the morning. The Queen’s dogs come to greet Her and my cat jumped on my bed. I closed my eyes for a minute and tried to feel myself as a queen.
While I was drinking my tea, Christina filled my tab with hot water and I took a bath.
After that I had breakfast. Elizabeth II usually has a buttered toast with a very thin layer of marmalade and a cup of tea. Christina cooked the same meal for me. It was really tasty!
Having breakfast I looked through four newspapers.
At 10 o’clock I hurried to switch on my computer and read a lot of e-mails. It was a bit boring.
At 11 o’clock my friends started to visit me. The most awful thing was that I couldn’t sit down even for a minute. I had to stand straight for more than 2 hours. It was difficult! How does the Queen do this every day?!
Thanks God, after that I could rest and have lunch. Her Majesty usually has sandwiches with salmon, cucumber and chicken. It is my favorite food too!
The rest was over. It was time for an official reception. I changed my dress. Some more people visited me.
I felt tired. At a quarter past 8 I sat at the table with my family. It was time for dinner. Elizabeth II usually has Her dinner with the Royal family but sometimes She has it alone.
After dinner I watched TV and at midnight I went to bed.
I was alone in my bedroom. It was quite at home – perfect conditions to think about my project’s results…
Conclusion
My project is over. You can see the results. I have counted all reigning persons all over the world. As I am studying English, Elizabeth II is the most interesting person for me. I have investigated Her Majesty’s biography, appearance, duties, daily routine and even Her fortune. Her Majesty celebrated Her 90th birthday a week ago but She is full of energy! As for me, Elizabeth II is the most elegant woman in the world. She is a real symbol of Her country. Her citizens are proud of Her and this fact is the most pleasant result of Her work.
I suppose, I have improved my knowledge in History, Geography, Maths and English.
Moreover, I have proved that the queen’s life isn’t a fairy tale. It is a hard life-long job. Now I can answer my main question: I don’t want to be a queen.
I think my project is very useful. Firstly, it was my first attempt to make a research. I am sure I will try again because it is one of the most interesting activities at school. Secondly, I hope this knowledge will help me in the future.
