INTRODUCTION
I have chosen this theme for my research because I’m going to be a journalist in the future and I’d like to try to do a research on the topic which has not been studied yet. Our lyceum is rather new; it was open only half a year ago. It has many aspects that are worth studying and discussing. There are a lot of things that I would like to look into and analyze.
The theme of this paper is “The Uniqueness of the Lyceum “Solaris”
The subject of the paper is to figure out some facts about the system of Russian education on the whole, school life and free time of students, vocational guidance of schoolchildren in our lyceum.
The objective of our research is to find out what is the difference between our lyceum and other modern schools in Russia and in what way the Lyceum “Solaris” stands out among many other schools.
The tasks are as follows:
To learn about education in Russia ;
To find out some peculiar traits of the lyceum “Solaris” ;
To compare the lyceum “Solaris” with other modern schools in Russia;
To draw some conclusions about our discoveries.
The following research methods have been used:
studying of different sources of information;
analysis, synthesis and generalization of received information;
The material that has been collected can find its application in general English course and in cultural studies.
The actuality may be seen in drawing attention to the problem of choosing a profession from early childhood and identify the ways of development of the child's personality.
Part I. School system in Russia.
In the first part of my research work I’d like to look into school system of our country in order to compare it with our lyceum and find out all the distinctive features of the latter.
Education is an important part of modern life. To be educated means to know a lot, to be intelligent and to succeed in life. For this purpose, we all must attend schools. Children in Russia start school at the age between 6 or 7. The first school day is 1st September called the Day of Knowledge. Students are at school till the end of May, with June being the month of exams. The school year is comprised of 4 terms with vacations in between: one week in November, two weeks in January, one week in the end of March and almost 3 months in summer. Most school weeks consists of 6 days. Russian schools use five-point grading system. Almost all Russian schools are well-equipped nowadays. Nowadays Russian educational system is undergoing extensive modernization to have the students develop up-to-date skills by means of computer literacy, internet connectivity and use of modern digital technologies in pedagogical process. Education in Russia is compulsory up to the 9th form. Each school has academic subjects, which are required for studying, for example: Russian, Literature, Maths, History, a foreign language and others. Lyceums and gymnasiums offer programs, giving a profound knowledge in some field of study. After 9th form pupils have to take examinations. Also they have a choice between entering the 10th grade of a general secondary school and enrolling in a specialized secondary or vocational school which offers programs of academic subjects and a program of training in a technical field of a profession. After finishing the 11th form of a secondary school, a lyceum or a gymnasium one can go on in higher education. All secondary schools until recently have been funded by the state. But, education in the Russian Federation is free at most schools. Nowadays there are a great number of private fee-paying secondary schools.
Part II. The Uniqueness of the Lyceum “Solaris”
3.1. The building and its characteristics.
School is a place where we spend a great amount of time. I suppose, one of the most important periods of our life is the period of studying at school. It’s actually the whole epoch for schoolchildren: they get major knowledge about outside world, obtain certain skills and get the experience of living in the society. At school we learn to behave according the situation and to cope with difficulties. I believe that our achievements depend on what kind of school we study at. I’m a student of the 5 media-1 form of the lyceum “Solaris”.
My school is nice and its building is different from those that are located in our region. In front of the school you can find a large place where the Fist Bell (the Day of Knowledge) takes place and around it there arelawns, bushes and flowerbeds. Behind the school there is a stadium with tribunes, a skating rink, a volleyball court, a basketball court, and a football pitch. Around school you can also see several playgrounds for children and a modern stage for performances. My school is a four-storey building. My school is considered to be one of the largest and most progressive ones in our district, so I’m glad to study there. It consists of six block sections which are interconnected.One of the blocks is for the primary school students and the second one is for secondary school students. The other blocks are for a school canteen, rooms for administration, two gyms and a swimming pool.
There are a lot of classrooms on each floor. They are light, spacious and airy. All the classrooms are well equipped. We have smart boards in all classrooms that we use during the lesson for different activities. I would like to say some words about our library. Many children of the 21st century do not like to read and probably, know nothing about the existence of libraries. Our school has the best library. You can charge your phone, sit on the couch or at the table, read an interesting book. Also there is a classroom where lessons are held. In our library you can get any book you want. Our librarian is very friendly and is always ready to help us.
3.2. Types of classes and the educational programme for them
Our lyceum runs a six days programme, with the exception of sport classes; they study only five days a week. Study program in school is rather fixed. The curricular is different for different classes; it depends on its area of activity. The curriculum includes two parts: the compulsory part and the part formed by the participants in the educational relations. Compulsory part is determined by the curriculum subjects of the obligatory subject areas; part formed by the participants of educational relations, includes training courses designed to meet the individual needs of students, in accordance with their requests, reflecting the specifics of the educational institution. Our lyceum like other schools in Russia uses five-point grading system.Teachers are people, leading us to our life-goals and the subjects we have at school are very important for us.
Our lyceum has some unique traits which you’ll never find in any other school in our area or even in Russia. Let us find out some options and conditions that our school offers. Firstly, there are five categories of class sets here. In every cohort there are classes of students that are called “Sportsmen”, “Raskovtsy”, “Cadets”, “Media” and “Gagarintsy”. Each class differs from the other with the subjects that are compulsory or additional for a particular class; there are differences in the school uniform and the number of days of the school week.
Secondly, the classes for additional education that are specific for a particular type of class are included in the schedule. That is, there is a timetable that includes all the main subjects that are compulsory for Russian education and there are subjects that are specific only to one of the classes and they are on the schedule.
Thirdly, there are classes in the lyceum that are divided according to gender, that is, classes where only boys study (“Sportsmen”) and classes only for girls (class of “Raskovtsy”). Let's start with how these classes differ from each other.
As it was previously said, that there are classes that are called “Sportsmen”. Those classes have only boys who play or do various spots: football, judo, swimming, karate and so on. Those students take part in various competitions and tournaments where they usually win and make our lyceum famous. Besides, they are different in that way that they have a special timetable and they can attend school five days a week.
The other type of classes is the class where only girls study, they are called “Raskovtsy”. They’ve got this name in honor of a famous Sovietnavigator Marina Raskova who had over 30,000 sorties in World War II. She was the first woman to become a navigator in the Soviet Air Force in 1933.She set a number of long distance records. That’s why the main dimension of studies for these classes is considered to be patriotic and aesthetical. Due to this fact, some extra-curricular courses for those classes involve Museum studies, choreography, study of local lore and project work “Start up”.
The next type of classes consists of those who are going to become military officers and defend our motherland in the future. Those students are called “Cadets”. They wear a special uniform to school which is significantly different from the uniform of other students of our lyceum. Together with main school subjects they are offered to study military fundamentals and choreography. Besides, all Cadets are the members of a patriotic movement “Junarmy”. The main task of the movement “Junarmy” is to educate healthy, patriotic citizens of Russia, the goal of the movement is that every young soldier firmly believes in his homeland, loves his homeland, knows its history, is proud of the feats of fathers and grandfathers, and to understand what is to be pursued. The cadets often participate in all kinds of Olympiads, contests and competitions.
I’m a student of the 5 media-1 form of the lyceum “Solaris”. Differential characteristics of the educational programme in “media” classes lie in career guidance. We are preparing for our future career as journalists, so we practice to interview people (we started doing it with our teachers and you can find some interviews on our website), write articles for our school website, take pictures of important events, record motivators and publish articles in our local newspaper “Apelsin”. There is a school of radio presenters in our lyceum. Every morning starts with radio news which is transmitted throughout the school, since we have loudspeakers in every place of it.
Finally, the last type of classes presented in our lyceum is called “Gagarintsy” and connected with science. These classes got their name in honor of the first cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin who made the first flight into space in 1961. They are supposed to develop science skills, especially mathematics, that’s why they have such course as Robocrew. They have a blast exploring real-world challenges using robotics to investigate possible solutions. The Robocrew and Science programs offer fun, hands-on experiences that get the kids excited about the world around them. As for project work, schoolchildren are expected to fulfill such project activity as the "School Order".
As you can see, the directions are individual and make a creative atmosphere for each student and opportunities for self-expression and self-development.
3.3. Extracurricular activities.
After-school activities are organized taking into the account the main areas of personal development (moral, social, intellectual, cultural, sports and health, etc.). The content of these classes is formed due to the wishes of the students and their parents and is carried out through various forms of organization, such as excursions, clubs, sections, conferences, disputes, school scientific societies, Olympiads, contests, competitions, research work, socially useful practice and others.
So, the students attend various clubs and sections after classes, which are organized for them in the Lyceum. The number of these additional classes is so diverse that it is impossible to list all of them, but among them there are street dancing, chess, darts, swimming, robotics, drama club, volleyball basketball and other sports sections. As for me, I personally attend English drama club, which is organized by our English teacher. We have classes two days a week where we not only dramatize some fairytales in English, sing English songs but practice out speaking skills and improve our English.
Almost every week we have some kind of activities: contests, exhibitions, sports competitions, concerts, scientific conferences, etc. Being a student of a media class, I attend almost all of these events, take photos and videos and then use this information to write articles for the school website and the website of our class. I do not get marks for this kind of activity, but I get an important experience that will be invaluable in my future profession and which I would not be able to get anywhere else.
Guests from other schools and even from other regions come to our lyceum for various events.All pupils and guests of our lyceum can visit our school museum. It is called “The first school museum about museums”. The exposition contains about 200 exhibits provided by the leading Saratov museums and telling about the history of our region. At the exhibition there are exhibits of the Museum of Local Lore, the museum of N.G. Chernyshevsky and K.A. Fedin, the Art Museum. A.N. Radishchev, the museum complex "Sokolovaya Gora". This unique project is a symbiosis of classical museum exhibits and modern technologies. An electronic guide, a holographic stand with the option of choosing an excursion, is adjacent to manuscripts, authentic costumes and historical documents. It is worth seeing. The leader of museum is a very creative person. She and her class often organize exhibitions for the students of our school and for our guests.
CONCLUSION
Summarizing my research, it is possible to distinguish several of the most important distinctive features of the Lyceum “Solaris” which make it unique.
The very first difference between our lyceum and other schools lies in its name. Most schools in Russia and in Saratov in particular have a number. Some of them have a name that reflects the specifics of the educational institution. Our Lyceum is called "Solaris" and it is impossible to guess in what sphere of education the students of this educational institution can develop. However, students who study there know that Solaris is a planet and like on every planet here there is a place for everyone and time and opportunities for the development of each child.
Another and very important difference of our lyceum from other schools is that it is a completely new modern building in which all the demands of modern society are taken into account. The atmosphere of modern design, influences the feelings and behavior of children and contribute to any activity - educational, playful, social. The best learning environment is formed in a diverse space where everyone can find a preferred place in which to combine lessons and project activities and develop different types of intelligence. Our Lyceum is a space for prosperity, success and security. It is a reliable, warm home, where work and rest, holidays and weekdays will be present, and most importantly - good traditions.
Thirdly, there is no such variety of classes that you can do after school and children often have to look for clubs for their interest in other schools or clubs. In our school you can find almost everything that interests you and take part in it seriously. The number of these additional classes is so diverse that it is impossible to list all of them, but among them there are street dancing, chess, darts, swimming, robotics, drama club, volleyball basketball and other sports sections.
And the most important and most significant difference between our lyceum and other schools in our country that in the Lyceum everyone can choose an educational programme to their liking and develop himself or herself from the first grade to prepare themselves for the future profession. Our lyceum is like a university for schoolchildren, where everyone chooses the faculty and specialization that he or she needs. However, education in our school is free, since it is a public school, you do not need to pay for studies here.
All in all, there are schools in Russia withgender-segregated education, there are schools recently built, which have excellent equipment, there are lyceums and gymnasiums specializing in a particular subject; there are schools for cadets and classes for athletes in schools etc. Sometimes a parent has to pay for the education of children in such schools. Our Lyceum combines all these opportunities together in one place. Furthermore, the education in our lyceum is free of charge. Therefore, our lyceum is an ideal place for the development of the personality of students, their skills that are important for achieving vital goals.
