Introduction

There are thousands of millions of galaxies in space. The Milky Way Galaxy in which we live is probably an average galaxy. It contains around 400 billion stars. Some of these have planets orbiting around them and the Erath is one of them.

The twentieth century was the bloodiest and the most tragic in the human history of the Earth. The roaring 1920s and the Depression years of the 1930s proved to be merely a prelude to World War II. The Great Patriotic War began. It was the time of destruction, death and heroes.

Vera Voloshina: killed twice

Vera Voloshina was born on the 30th of September in 1919 in the mining capital of Kuzbas – Kemerovo. Her father was a miner and her mother was a schoolteacher. She was a pupil of school № 12, which was graduated in 1937. Being well physically developed she became interested in athletic and won the city championship in the high jump. After finishing secondary school, she moved to Moscow and went on to higher education at the Central Institute of physical culture. In summer of 1941 she was mobilized to dig trenches and ditches on the outskirts of the capital. On the 14th of October, 1941, Vera Voloshina volunteered for the Red Army. She enrolled in the military unit № 9903 of the intelligence staff of the Western front, in which groups of spies were trained to operate behind enemy lines. There she met and became friends with Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya. On the 21st of November Vera Voloshina went on her last job. The commander of the detachment was Paul Provorov. Coming under the enemy fire, Vera Voloshina was badly injured and separated from the group. For many years she was listed in the lists of missing, and only in 1957 year the Moscow journalist Georgy Frolov found that she was taken as prisoner by the Germans and on the 29th of November she was hanged in the village Golovkovo. Her body was buried in the same village and later her remains were moved to a mass grave in the village Kryukovo. In 1994 she was awarded the title of the hero of the Russian Federation.

The Truly Great

BY STEPHEN SPENDER

I think continually of those who were truly great.

Who, from the womb, remembered the soul’s history

Through corridors of light, where the hours are suns,

Endless and singing. Whose lovely ambition

Was that their lips, still touched with fire,

Should tell of the Spirit, clothed from head to foot in song.

And who hoarded from the Spring branches

The desires falling across their bodies like blossoms.

What is precious, is never to forget

The essential delight of the blood drawn from ageless springs

Breaking through rocks in worlds before our earth.

Never to deny its pleasure in the morning simple light

Nor its grave evening demand for love.

Never to allow gradually the traffic to smother

With noise and fog, the flowering of the spirit.

Near the snow, near the sun, in the highest fields,

See how these names are fêted by the waving grass

And by the streamers of white cloud

And whispers of wind in the listening sky.

The names of those who in their lives fought for life,

Who wore at their hearts the fire’s centre.

Born of the sun, they travelled a short while toward the sun

And left the vivid air signed with their honour.

We remember

My name is Darya. I live in the village Golovkovo. I am a pupil of the 10th form, I am always proud of my school, of the place where I was born. The history of my country is my history and I must remember it. I want to invite you to our school museum in which there are a lot of documentaries, including permanent collection of the historical, war objects. In our village there is a magnificent memorial which has been built to commemorate the Victory. On the 9th of May all stand in silence for a minute and remember our national hero of the Great Patriotic War Vera Voloshina.

Conclusion

Love for freedom is a national character of the Russian people. No enemy has been able to conquer our country. When Russia was attacked by the enemy, the Russian people rose up in defense of their Motherland. We want to live in peace with all countries. We hate terrorism and I am sure The work we have to do is with ourselves, if we are ever going to be at peace with each other.
